2019 Executive Meeting Minutes

Tuesday February 12th, 2019, 4:30pm
Education Support Hub, Milner St., Hindmarsh

  1. Welcome: Meeting opened 4.30 pm.
  2. Present: Grant, Tim, Alex, Jayne, Harry, Guy, Karen, Harry
    Apologies: Zora
  3. Acceptance of Minutes for Executive meeting 15/05/2018 Moved: Harry Seconded: Alex ACCEPTED
  4. Business Arising:
    • Community TV ongoing – licence reprieve for two years until 2020.  Could be an issue for lobbying politicians during next Federal election
  5. Business:
    1. AGM 2019 – Monday February 25th? Palace Nova screening of Stan & Ollie?  The Kindergarten Teacher?  Wednesday February 27th is preferred.  Grant to organise.
    2. Adelaide International Youth Film Festival – amateur student films screened alongside of professional ones.  Deadline for submissions is April 30th.  Films made last year can be submitted.  Both international & local students participate.
    3. M.E.E.T. Group – continues to grow but disconnect between its open membership & SAAME's formal financial membership.  Do we need to create a new type of membership?  Our database has not been updated since 2016.  Use the proposed Expo as membership drive.  Free or discounted for SAAME members.  Put a reminder on M.E.E.T. to renew membership.
    4. SACE report – Successful 2018 in moving to all online assessment and dispersed moderation.  One of the first subjects to do this.  SACE Board does not provide P.D. for teachers only Clarifying Forums.  We have done this previously.  Also an issue with providing good examples from SACE due to copyright issues.
    5. Arts Inspire – Continues from last year.  Ed. Dept. is funding some PD around the Arts and Gifgted & Talented students.  Planning is underway for a Conference Friday 14th June in the pm and all day Saturday June 15th.  SAAME to provide a panelist (talented Media student) to talk about their journey and two different workshops on the Saturday.  Aim is to help teachers identify talented students in their area and devise appropriate learning strategies.
    6. Membership drive - refer to 3 above.
    7. Expo/conference – google form, need weeks of advance notice: end of term 2, or beginning of term 3 may be better, early next year (seems to be the popular choice), Fri+Sat combination (work and social), suitable venue – Mercury Cinema and MRC have meeting rooms in same building. Capri? Chelsea? Magill campus? Wilderness? Survey who will come, set up a registry.
    8. Website – Need to have a new website running.  Tim has offered space on his server but we would need our own Domain name.  Could be asn.au and may cost ~$15/year.  Other Domains dearer.  Investigate further.
    9. Logo – new logo ongoing
    10. S.M.A.R.T. - School Media Arts Resource Team concept discussed.  Idea has received positive response from teachers, schools etc.  For the cost of a TRT day.  We provide the school with an 'Authorised' teacher to work with students and/ or teachers.  Sharyn Schnell is happy to promote this.  Discuss at the AGM.
    11. World Teachers Day – SA Educators (CEASA) again hosted a cocktail party Friday October 26th.  We nominated Alex for the Early Career Teacher Award and while he did not win, it was a good opportunity to promote SAAME to the other Associations and key decision/ policy makers.
    12. GMIL BtN Fake News Event – Held at ABC Adelaide on Oct. 24th this was an opportunity for teachers to learn more about the Fake News Series produced by BtN in Adelaide.  Writer/ producer/ director Sarah Larsen discussed the process of producing the series and a tour of Star Trek set used in the Bias episode followed.  This event was the only Australian one held as a part of UNESCO's Global Media & Information Literacy Week and was listed on their website.  This also contains many useful resources and SAAME should promote GMIL week more.  Subsequently Grant had a letter published in the Advertiser publicising this in the context of a call by Michael Carr-Greg for students to be issued 'digital licences'.
  6. Reports:
    • Media Moves: April program tomorrow night Wed. February 13th.  Show is broadcast the second Wednesday each month, 8:30 to 9 pm, on 5PBA-FM 89.7 MHz or on-line.
    • Website: MEET active with 75 members.
    • AOB: none
